Baboon Demon render

Baboon Demons are ferocious animals that are often found prowling the jungles of Kurast. The sole exception is the Dune Beast, which is found roaming in the Palace Cellar in the city of Lut Gholein. They are often quick to anger and will attack with great ferocity. The danger of these creatures is not to be underestimated as they are frequently found together in packs. These monsters are fond of running away once their hit points reach critical levels.

Although they are called Demons, in-game all variants are Animals, even the ghostly Night Marauders.

Lore[]

Twisted by the vile powers of Mephisto, these once docile tree dwellers have become rampaging monstrosities that prey on the weak and unwary. Their basic instincts have been heightened as well, increasing their carnivorous tendencies as well as making them attack anything - or anyone - that poses a threat to their dominance of the jungle.

"Dune Beasts, the weakest of the breed, are sometimes seen across the water in the sands of Aranoch. How they got there is a mystery.


Jungle Hunters were especially docile before their transformation. Now their teeth are continually stained with the blood of small animals they find around their trees.

Doom Apes signal their impending attack with steady, powerful drumming on trees and hollow gourds. This serves both as a warning to adventurers and a summoning to more of the apes' kin.

Temple Guards were beasts trained long ago to guard temples to lost deities. The temples still stand, and the creatures have passed down the tradition of guarding to their young. They no longer remember why they rend temple interlopers, but that hardly dulls their savage zeal."

There are sixth types of Baboon Demon:

  • The Dune Beast is the weakest variant of the Baboon Demon. It is found in the second act, in the Harem 2, Palace Cellar 1-3. They are relatively easy to defeat except in larger, overwhelming numbers. They are first of two variants not to call the jungles of Kurast and Kehjistan home.
  • The Rock Dweller is the second variant of Baboon Demon that was supposed to be outside in the second act, but is unused.
  • The Jungle hunter is the third variant of Baboon Demon, and is seen throughout the Spider Forest.
  • The Doom Ape is the fourth variant of the Baboon Demon and it is found in the Lower Kurast with other animal monsters.
  • The Temple Guard is the fifth variant of the Baboon Demon. They are seen closer to the Durance of Hate, rarely in the Kurast Causeway alongside Infidels. Their power is possibly due to their proximity to Mephisto's corruption.
  • The Night Marauder is sixth and also strongest kind of Baboon Demon. These beasts are found only in the Halls of Vaught (no Unique) on Nightmare/Hell difficulty, deal Cold damage with 85% chance when using one claw, and are somewhat ethereal in form. However as their relative species the Night Marauders are also faint-hearted and usually run away when injured.

There are no Super Unique Baboon Demons.
