"The seers tell us that as they pass from our world, they are reborn. Demons "die" to dwell in a realm of darkness, and there they change before returning, oftimes in new forms."

The Black Abyss (a.k.a. the Void)[1] is the apparent birthplace of demons.[2]

Lore[]

No-one (or at least, no human) knows exactly what the Abyss is, but it is believed that once something is banished to the Abyss, it can never return.[3] To best knowledge, the Abyss is located in the deepest, darkest depths of Hell, where in the pitch blackness of the Abyss, even the darkness of the upper realms of Hell seems like day.[1]

When a demon is killed, they return to the Abyss to reform, and oftimes, re-emerge in a new form. A quintet of demons that would become known as the Voidwound are an example of this, where after spending primordial ages within the Abyss, they re-emerged, completely changed.[4]

The Prime Evils ruled over the creatures of the Abyss, but it is said that this was not always the case. It is believed that some of these nightmares may still exist hidden deep within the pitch of the Abyss.[1] Of note, a "terrible creature" was summoned from the Abyss to bind the spirit of Izual.[2] Other creatures of the Abyss include the Stygian Beast and Reziarfg.[1]

During the return of the Prime Evils, the spirits of Diablo and Mephisto were (supposedly) banished to the Abyss after the destruction of their soulstones at the Hellforge. However, as aspects of their essence lingered in Sanctuary, they were able to be 'marked' by Adria, preparing them for absorption into the Black Soulstone.[3]
