"Just make a movie! I don't care if it’s a good movie. How could it be? I just want a movie based on Diablo."

A hypothetical Diablo film has been discussed at various points in time.

History[]

Ideas of a a Diablo movie go at least as far back as 1996 or 1997.

Multiple movie details were in the works that never went through.[1]

The film "A Man Apart" starring Vin Diesel (released 4 April 2003) had been tentatively titled Diablo until Blizzard sued New Line in March 2001 over it.[2] Blizzard reportedly trademarked a Diablo film in April 1996, and a 2nd film titled "Diablo II: Salvation" in February 1997. "DiabloMovie.com" had been parked by an Australian on 30 September 2000.

In 2007, it was speculated that Legendary Pictures were producing a film titled "Diablo", based on the Diablo series. The film was listed in Legendary Picture's "In Development" list along with the (already confirmed) World of Warcraft movie. A day later, the film was taken down from the list.[3]

In 2015, Activision Blizzard Studios listed the Diablo setting as one of Blizzard Entertainment's franchises that they could develop a film for.[4]

In March 2019, Blizzard Entertainment filed for a trademark for "downloadable films and movies featuring narratives based on a video game and provided via a video-on-demand service," the video game in question being the Diablo series.[5]

David Craddock "In early 1997, Bob Clardy and the heads of other studios now owned by CUC — including Sierra, the two Blizzards, and Dynamix .. Lynch eyed one of the hottest prospects on offer. Blizzard North’s Diablo was brand new and already a smash hit, but its developers had opted to move on and write a sequel. To CUC’s executives, abandoning Diablo was as good as leaving money on the table. Churning out an expansion disc loaded with more levels and items should be a breeze .. Blizzard’s Erich Schaefer remembered being less upset at sharing custody of the original Diablo than his peers at Blizzard North or South."
quoting undated comment by Erich Schaefer “I kind of thought, Oh, that’s cool. People are making more content for my game. I didn’t worry about the quality level. At times I would argue it didn’t matter what the quality level was. There were times when we had movie deals in the works, and I was always saying, ‘Just make a movie! I don’t care if it’s a good movie. How could it be? I just want a movie based on Diablo.’ I was usually for those kinds of things, and I think Blizzard South was much more hesitant, frankly.”
