Lore[]

"They'll jump right up onto these rocks and drag you down. An experienced hunter could survive an attack, but someone like you will be lunch if you keep stomping around here, making all that noise."

A Dune Thresher

The Dune Thresher is an elusive being with a tremendous capacity for bloodshed. It lurks beneath the sands, rising up to seize prey in its jaws and rend the body until it is but sinew and gore.[1] They travel beneath the sand similar to how a fish might travel through water. The churning of the sand is a telltale sign of their presence. They cut through the sand using their jutting, angular lower jaw, which allows the Thresher to swim effortlessly beneath the sand with unimaginable swiftness. They are attracted to noise from the surface, which is how they detect their prey.

It is a misconception that standing on rocks will keep one safe from a Dune Thresher. In reality, the creatures are capable of jumping up and pulling their prey off rocks to their death.[2]

Threshers are said to find Essence of the Twin Seas to be irresistible.[3]

History[]

"As I was preparing to set pen to paper to begin recording my thoughts at the beginning of my epic undertaking to gather the world's knowledge together in one tome, the hand of providence tapped me on the shoulder. The news that a rogue burrower had killed a citizen just outside the city gave me the wonderful opportunity to see firsthand one of the more disturbing creatures we share this world with – the savage dune thresher."

A Dune Thresher

Dune Threshers were driven away from settled locales to the deep desert wastes of the Borderlands long before the present day. Consequently, Dune Threshers are rarely seen by the city-dwellers of Kehjistan. However, every so often, whether due to injury or old age, a Dune Thresher will venture to the edge of civilization to feast on humans. When this happens, a professional hunter is called in to end the threat.[2]

Diablo III[]

Dune Thresher in-game

Dune Threshers are encountered in Act II of Diablo III, albeit only in areas where there is sand. The Moontooth Dreadshark is the only exception, for it lurks in the Sewers of Caldeum).

Normally they move very quickly underground, making only their bladed spines visible at surface (hence the Sand Sharks name). In this form, they are harmless, but are also impervious to damage. From time to time, they emerge from beneath the sand, delivering quick and damaging melee attacks with their jaws. The main danger is their ability to burrow at will, making you unable to damage them continuously. This is especially irritating if they also have a Shielding affix. They may not burrow 4 seconds after emerging, and can spend 3 seconds burrowed in combat.

Their toughness is slightly above average, but killing them may take a lot of time, especially if they are an Elite pack. Also avoid being killed by the elite affix long-lasting abilities while the Threshers are hiding below.

This section contains facts and trivia relevant to this article.
  • There is a glitch (or perhaps just an unexpected feature) that allows Dune Threshers to move underground over the hanging bridges in Black Canyon Mines. Visually it looks as if they were flying right below the bridges. However, it also allows seeing the animation: the beast is literally swimming through the sand.
  • An offshoot of the dune thresher that swims through lava can be seen in the edges of the Pit of Anguish dungeon in Diablo Immortal.
