Ethereal Items

From Diablo Wiki

Ethereal items are only found in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. Ethereal items are representative of weapons and armor (but never amulets, rings, arrows, bolts, bows, crossbows, Phase Blades or set items) crafted from other-worldly material. They are transparent, and can be magical, socketed, rare or unique.

Ethereal is an item flag, like socketed, and is not a prefix or suffix. When an item is ethereal, it gains a bonus to its damage/defense, is reduced in durability, and is no longer repairable.

The bonus to damage or defense is 50%. The reduction of durability is 45%. The sale value is reduced by 75% or more.

Ethereal items can be self repairing, but if the item breaks it cannot be used again, even if it later regains full durability. The same principal applies to ethereal throwing weapons - if they self replenish, then you can only use them if you have never hit 0.

Using ethereal items in a Horadric Cube recipe will generally return them to normal items, with normal statistics.
