Exceptional Items are items in Diablo II that have better stats than Normal Items, but are still inferior to Elite Items. Each type of Exceptional Item shares the same appearance and icon in the interface as an Elite and a Normal item, but with different names. They only appear in the Lord of Destruction expansion.
Monsters in Act IV Normal start to drop low quality exceptional items, but as soon as you progress to Act V Normal or Act I Nightmare, you will notice that you will find better items. Normal Diablo and Normal Baal will drop better exceptional items than the ordinary mobs over the Act IV area.
All Exceptional belts have 16 belt slots / "boxes" (4 rows), regardless of the lower number that the normal equivalent has.
