Biography

"I am searching for an apprentice. Someone to train in the art of righteous warfare. Someone to carry my shield, my name and my crusade after I fall in battle. Not everyone is suited for this life. The Crusade is a heavy burden, but someone has to carry it. My name is Johanna. I am searching for an apprentice...Interested?"

Per the naming conventions of the Crusaders, there have been many women who have borne the name Johanna in service of the Crusade, and each has given her life to purify her faith.

The most recent Johanna, born in the Swamplands, was famous for her skillful shield work in combat. She saw many friends fall, and it never became any easier. At some point during her research, she stumbled across the name Zoltun Kulle. Reading up on him, she decided that he "sounded a bit mad." When she vanished, leaving her shield and favorite flail behind, many speculated that she was dead. At the least, it appeared that her journey was unplanned. In truth, she had departed for Khanduras, in search of the Fallen Star. She did not have an apprentice, though was aware that she would have to take on one soon.

On her journey west, Johanna passed by Caldeum. She didn't stop, as she knew that other Crusaders were investigating the city.

Johanna's story was recorded in the annals of the Crusader order.

In-game

Diablo III

Johanna has two legendary items in Diablo III named after her; Johanna's Argument (a flail) and Guard of Johanna (a Crusader shield).

Through Heroes of the Storm, she can be considered to be a possible representation of the Nephalem in a similar manner to characters such as Valla, Li-Ming, Sonya, and Nazeebo.

Diablo IV

Johanna can be found during a side quest at Zarbinzet called "Remnants of Faith," where her apprentice, Tomyris, asks the Wanderer to guide her from Hawezar Wetlands to Maugan's Folly, so she can retrieve her late master's armor. The player finds her corpse near the dungeon Maugan's Works. Once the player finds the armor inside the dungeon, Tomyris dons the armor and the name Johanna to carry on her master's legacy.

Although initially believed to be the same Johanna from Diablo III, the different face, hair color and hair style suggest it is in fact a different person. It's commonly theorised that the corpse found outside Maugan's Works likely belongs to the apprentice of the playable crusader from the previous game, who, just like Tomyris, took on the name of her master after her death.

Completing "Remnants of Faith" rewards the player with a rare chest armor called Johanna's Namesake.

Heroes of the Storm

Johanna as seen in-game

Johanna appears as a Crusader hero in Heroes of the Storm. In her standard equipment, she wears the Royal Shield, Plate Mail (with respective armor tier components), but her flail does not match any existing item. She uses Blessed Shield, Falling Sword, Shield Glare, Punish and Condemn skills, as well as Iron Skin as a passive trait.

Unlike other heroes representing playable classes, visually, Johanna does not follow the classic phenotype of the in-game Crusader class, having a different face, hair color and haircut.

Personality and Traits

"Jokes? You're expecting jokes? Fine, I believe I can accommodate. A Crusader, a Paladin and a Templar walk into a tavern. And then they all have a drink. (laughs) ...no? Well not everyone appreciates Crusader humor."

Johanna dislikes Lyndon. She is confident that she will be able to cleanse the Zakarum faith, but believes that even after that, there'll still be something that needs a good smiting. She is not unnerved by spiders.

Trivia

• Johanna may be named after and/or inspired by Joan of Arc (the medieval French spelling of her name was Jehane, and is still rendered Johanna in modern German). Her hairstyle bears some (but not complete) similarity to that of Joan in the 1999 film.
• As Guard of Johanna uses an Askari shield model, it is possible that Johanna, or her predecessor(s), came from Skovos Isles.
• Many files in Heroes of the Storm also refers to her as Anajinn.
