Jondar, the Necromancer Betrayer is a Super Unique human enemy in Diablo III. He is a former member of the Templar Order who betrayed his brethren to become a Necromancer serving the Dark Coven.
Biography[]
Jondar was once a member of the Templar Order. Like many of the Order's number, he apparently was conscripted, and subjected to torture in an effort to remove the memories of his former life.
Eventually, he found a set of what he called "key words" hidden in a dusty libram. As he read the words, memories of his past returned to torment him.[1] He also discovered plans for angelic weapons made for human hands, set with runes similar to those that graced the armor of Tyrael.[2]
Jondar fled the Templar Order, and fell into the service of the Coven. He was pursued by the Templar, Kormac, who was captured by the Coven. After being freed from tortures by the Nephalem, he asked his companion(s) to help him kill Jondar. After Jondar was defeated, he told Kormac that he had been led astray by the Coven's dark magic. Kormac, unforgiving of betrayal, killed him as he lay mortally wounded.[3]
Kormac recovered Jondar's journal and discovered the series of events which had led Jondar to the Coven. As he recovered his own memories of what the Templar had done to him, he took a softer view on his former ally, reflecting that if he hadn't been betrayed by the Order, Jondar might not have come under Maghda's thrall.[2]
In-game[]
Jondar appears in Act I of Diablo III in the quest "Reign of the Black King." He is killed as part of a scripted event with Kormac.
Upon his defeat/death he will not immediately drop his loot: there is a delay where Kormac finishes him off after his last words, then the loot is dropped. Players can pass the time by destroying nearby scenery since even if they don't want that loot, they can't pass the barricade under Kormac breaks it, even though they have no trouble destroying other wooden barricades.
He appears a bounty in the game's Adventure Mode. There is also another Necromancer Betrayer in Adventure Mode named Rad'Noj, whose name is 'Jondar' spelled backwards. They both have the ability to shoot multiple Poison bolts in five directions simultaneously, much like Poison Nova, and can summon Skeletons (named Servants of Jondar) at their side.
Trivia[]
- A rare monster named Jonn-Dar exists in World of Warcraft. Moreover, the achievements that involve killing him are named after Kormac's battle exclamations.
- If the player character is a Necromancer, they, oddly, will not react in any special way to Jondar's introduction.
