A Scavenger

Found in Khanduras[2] Scavengers are the smallest of a related group of demonic creatures the feed upon carrion, mostly the remains of victims killed by their larger cousins.[1] They were hunted to near-extinction several centuries prior to the Darkening of Tristram, but the hardiest of their kind survived, and bred among themselves in secret places, renewing their species. Now, several varieties of Scavenger prowl Khanduras.[2] Unlike most scavengers these creatures extremely aggressive and will not hesitate to attack anyone hapless enough to encounter them. They have powerful legs which they use for swift springing attacks, striking at vulnerable faces and throats.[1] They prefer to move in packs, and attack their prey en masse. However, if their intended prey puts up a good fight, the Scavengers may hesitate to continue their assault.[2] Additionally, their primary weakness is their voracious appetite; the smell of death may drive them into a feeding frenzy where they will stop their attacks to feast upon remains that are nearby.[1]

In-game[]

"Scavengers are the least of the various types, a crouched and debased humanoid form with glowing reddish eyes. They feed primarily at night."

- Monster summary(src)

Scavengers are monsters encountered in Diablo. They can appear in all levels of the Cathedral, and the early Catacomb levels. A player can see them coming as they crawl with tails raised high. They are easily dispatched.  As suggested by the lore, scavengers will sometimes cease attacking the player to eat a nearby monster corpse, then resume attacking.

In Anniversary Dungeon of Diablo III, Scavengers are represented with Hellion models.
