"That's my friend Humbart. He's a skull. Please ignore him."

- Zayl(src)

Humbart Wessel is a talking skull, and companion of the Necromancer Zayl.

Biography[]

"A brave warrior with many opinions, Humbart journeys still through the mortal plane, sharing his version of wit and wisdom."

- Character description(src)

Journey to Ureh[]

In life, Humbart was a veteran fighter from Westmarch, making a living as a mercenary captain. In the year -736, he traveled with Gregus Mazi to Ureh. On the seventh day, Mazi again approached the edge of the city's ruins. Humbart told him that the quest was helpless and they should just leave, but Mazi remained steadfast. Humbart was skeptical of Mazi's claims of reaching Ureh and entering Heaven, but sure enough, a shimmer occurred, and the ruins appeared 'alive.' Lights even glowed from them. Mazi disappeared before their eyes as he entered the shadow of the city. Neither Humbart or his men would follow the Sorcerer. The mercenaries camped outside the ruins. They heard voices coming from them, as if calling to them, but none of them would enter. He told his mercenary company that when Mazi came out the following day, they'd go in and get their fill. But tomorrow came, and there were no ruins, no lights, no voices, and no Gregus Mazi.

Per a prior agreement with Lord Hyram, Humbart recorded his experiences and sent it to the Zakarum.[1]

Resurrection[]

Long after Humbart's death, Zayl the Necromancer resurrected him to find what information he could on Ureh. Somehow, he never got round to sending Humbart's spirit back to the Plane of the Dead. Humbart, apparently content with (un)life as a talking skull, was in no hurry to be sent back.[2] Zayl ensorcelled the warrior's skull and made it his personal companion and magical off-hand tool, keeping Humbart inside his belt pouch.[1]

The Kingdom of Shadow[]

Moon of the Spider[]

Storm of Light[]

Reaper of Souls[]

Humbart was with Zayl as he entered the Blood Marsh, in a bid to fix the imbalance in the area. The pair encountered the Nephalem. Despite Zayl telling Humbart to be quiet, he told the Nephalem that if Zayl had been in the Tomb of Rakkis when Malthael had come to retrieve the Black Soulstone, he wouldn't have succeeded. The Nephalem told them of their intention to kill Adria. Humbart decided the matter to be settled, and that they should go get a drink.[3]

In-game[]

Humbart appears as both an NPC and pet in Diablo III.

NPC[]

Humbart appears in Act V of Diablo III, carried by Zayl. He himself isn't clickable in the same way as a standard NPC is, but will chime in when the player converses with Zayl.

This section contains facts and trivia relevant to this article.
  • The timeframe for Humbart's travels with Gregus Mazi can be ascertained per the belief that Ureh briefly reappears every 2000 years. If this is the case however, then Humbart is a contradiction, as Westmarch didn't exist as a nation during this time, nor did the Zakarum faith.
