Fire Wall (Diablo II) is a Sorceress Skill in Diablo II.

Lore[]

This skill allows the Sorceress to raise a barrier of flame to block her flanks from attack, creating a tactical advantage for both herself and her allies. Any creature unwitting enough to attempt to cross the barrier will feel the full force of these flames as they advance to their ruin.

Inferno: +1% damage per level

Fire Wall creates a wall of fire in a horizontal line in front of the caster. Its damage per second and its length increase with more levels. Fire Wall is arguably the highest damaging spell in the Sorceress' arsenal. It deals massive damage, and if used correctly it can take down most foes instantly or fairly quickly.

Due to its low synergies, Fire Wall is often utilized in builds (most notably the Fire Wall Sorceress) since it can be easily combined with other skills without having to sink too many points into associated skills to maximize its damage potential. However, even though it doesn't synergize well, it is still incredibly powerful, especially with Fire Mastery. The only problems are its rather limited mobility, its cooldown, and high Mana cost, and the fact that swift enemies and human players can often avoid it with ease.

Multiple Fire Walls stack damage, though not too many can be stacked since there's a short cooldown and the flames dissipate after a while. Using Fire Wall on the other side of valleys, rivers and other obstacles can cause monsters to bunch up and take heavy damage. Laying down some Fire Walls, then leading monsters into it is a useful defensive application of Fire Wall. Another tactic to keep monsters within the wall is to run in circles around the areas of Fire Wall, until the Monsters within die. Monsters distracted by minions or party members can fall easy prey to Fire Walls. This works especially well with something like a Golem which attracts monsters. Some fast and erratically moving monsters, however, will generally avoid the Fire Wall.

Heavy users of high level Fire Walls often learn to place the wall immediately next to their Sorceress, perpendicular to the direction of an enemy. With this orientation, the Wall actually extends directly toward the enemy, and the Sorceress is only a step a way from the Wall herself, thereby luring the enemy to walk down the entire length of the wall. Teleport can be used when the enemy nears the same end as the Sorceress to lead the enemy back along the Wall the other way.

The "Radius" (renamed to "Range" in D2R, i.e. wall length) values provided by the tooltip are invalid, because D2LoD had a bug which resulted in the length of the flames being always 4/3 yards bigger than described (base missile range was assumed 5 but was actually 7), which was then ported into D2R[1]. Even if this bug weren't present, this value would still be only an approximation of what really happens due to difference in diagonal vs. horizontal/vertical walls; those values are very close to the "range from tooltip + 4/3 yards" value though[2][3].

  1. the error was ported from desc fun 29 in D2LoD to `m1rn` etc. formulas in D2R (note that actual `m1rn` etc. were 100% correct in D2LoD) - to verify whether this bug exists use Range = 0 and LevRange = 10 e.g. for `firewallmaker` missile in `Missiles.txt`, and observe the results for slvl 1. In both D2LoD and D2R tooltip will show no range (0), but the spell will work as if with range 10, proving the actual calc used is `Range + lvl * LevRange` and not `Range + (lvl-1) * LevRange` as expected based on the tooltip.
