"There are great dangers here. Be careful you do not lose yourself forever in the beauty of what you see, what you feel. Be aware of how hope can be lost and turn into despair. Remember that you were never meant to experience this place."

Gardens of Hope

The Gardens of Hope

The Gardens of Hope are located within Heaven, and are the domain of the archangel Auriel. It is a place of meditation that acts as a retreat for those who feel lost.[1]

Lore[]

The gardens appear to stretch endlessly. The ground is dusted with flowers made of multicolored light petals.[2] The flowers bloom eternally, scenting the air with soft perfume.[3]

The gardens are in a constant state of flux, with some flowers fading, and others bursting into color. Reflective pools surround the gardens' fountains of light and sound. Music of a kind is constantly playing. Humans who enter the gardens can have their fears lifted, but they run the risk of being lost in its atmosphere.[2] Mortals who have experienced the gardens have described an almost intoxicating tranquility, one in which the mind can become lost, forgetful, and complacent.[3]

History[]

During the assault on the High Heavens by the forces of Hell, it was one of the primary battlegrounds of Diablo's assault. Numerous Hell Rifts were opened in the area to allow demons to pour through.[4] Diablo chose the Gardens specifically as one of his focal points,[3] for he knew that if Auriel were to fall, the Heavenly Host would lose hope. However, the Hell Rifts were closed by the Nephalem in pursuit of the demon lord.[4]

Later, Tyrael and the reformed Horadrim travelled through the gardens as part of their heist of the Black Soulstone. Jacob Staalek was nearly caught up in the gardens' atmosphere, but Tyrael prevented him from being too engrossed in it. He realized that the Black Soulstone was corrupting the gardens, noticing hairline cracks through the branches of a tree; corruption, spreading like a disease.[2]

In-game[]

The Gardens appear with two "tiers" in Act IV of Diablo III when playing through the Campaign, with a Waypoint in both tiers. This is the first large zone in the High Heavens encountered by The Nephalem, entering from The Vestibule of Light. Dense clumps of Demonic Corrupt Growths block access to most of the zone, but Auriel, Archangel of Hope empowers the Nephalem to destroy them after she is rescued from Rakanoth in the connected Library of Fate subzone. The Nephalem then enters and destroys two Hell Rifts, one in each Tier, before proceeding to The Crystal Colonnade.

Adventure Mode adds a 3rd Tier to the Gardens of Hope, and the single two-level Hell Rift of that mode is only accessible by waypoint, not by a portal in the Gardens - although the dungeon return stone at its end does bring the Nephalem to the Gardens' 1st Tier.

Nekarat the Keywarden is present in the 2nd Tier in Torment difficulty and above in both modes.
