The Gnarled Root is a Unique Spiked Club and Club which has a very high damage modifier and other attractive attributes, but suffers from a couple of drawbacks: it does very low damage so that even with the modifiers it's still not that good and it lowers the player's Armor. One solution to the first problem would be the Oils added in Diablo: Hellfire, but even those are not a good option as the ones which add damage last for only one game.
