Inventory

From Diablo Wiki

An Inventory is the character's backpack. In it, he/she carries the items that he/she can use anytime he/she wants, and that he/she is not wearing.

The inventory is made up of 40 slots; different items take up a different amount of slots. Once all the slots are full, picking up new items will not be possible until some are sold to a vendor, removed from the inventory by throwing items away or placing them in the stash.

This inventory your character begins with cannot be expanded, be sure to keep a Tome of Town Portal with you!

The only way for getting "more" space for the loot is to carry the Horadric cube in the inventory. It is the only space you can access without teleporting back to town. The cube needs 2x2 slot in the inventory but gives you 3x4 slot. However if you put a charm in the cube, you won't get any of the charm's bonuses. Space for Gold is also limited, on Normal it is capped at 500 thousands, on Nightmare at 750 thousand, and on Hell at 850 thousands.

In Diablo III, the Tetris style inventory has apparently been abandoned, and has been replaced by a slot based inventory in which scrolls and other miscellaneous items stack. It appears there have been talks about making the inventory weight based, but there are very few chances to see this in the game.[1]
