- This is about the weapon type Spears. For the individual weapon, see Spear.
"Spears pierce foes from a slightly safer distance than shorter melee weapons, allowing the wielder to enjoy the thrill of killing something up close while limiting the risk of being killed back."— Game Guide(src)
Spears are long and piercing Melee Weapons, used for hitting or stabbing, mainly used by Amazons in Diablo II. They exist in both one-handed and two-handed variants, and are different from polearms. Generally, spears lack a cleaving blade, having a sharp piercing tip instead.

Spears are compatible with Amazon Javelin and Spear Skills in the left and center columns of the skill tree, and with Barbarian Spear Mastery. Spear damage scales with the wielder's Strength, with each point of Strength equivalent to 1% enhanced damage. Magic and rare spears can have either Amazon or Barbarian skill prefixes. Compared to polearms, spears support fewer rune words, tend to have a longer reach, and tend to be faster for Amazons, about the same speed for Barbarians, and slower for other classes.
Javelins are a related type of one-handed weapons. Javelins count as spears as well as combo (melee/thrown) weapons.
The expansion also has a category of Amazon spears, which count as spears as well as Amazon Weapons. Neither desert mercenary hirelings nor other classes may use Amazon spears.
There are no set spears.
Spear rune wordsEdit
The maximum number of sockets possible in a spear is 6.
In the expansion, the following Weapon Rune Words function in nonmagic spears with exactly the specified number of sockets:
In Diablo III, only one-handed Spears exist. They are mostly used by Barbarians, but any other class may try and use them as well. They have medium to fast attack speed, but their length does not give any advantage in game. Spears may be transmogrified into Daggers, and vice versa.
