In Diablo I two main kinds of books can be found:
There are books, that cannot be picked up. These trigger either quests, or they give historic background information.
The books that can be picked up, are spellbooks. Using them teaches the player a certain spell or increases the spell's level. Reading a spellbook also partially refreshes your mana-pool.

Diablo II stopped using the spell book method and formed a skill tree instead.
