Spirit Ward has the potential to have a high chance of blocking on par with that of Gerke's Sanctuary. Therefore, it is useful in the hands of almost any class, due to its very useful defensive properties.
Spirit Ward wields a boost to All Resistances, a property useful in shields due to the lowered resistances in Nightmare and Hell difficulties. A player could further augment this property by socketing Spirit Ward and inserting a perfect Diamond, but Spirit Ward's resistance boosts are generally fairly high on their own.
Besides its high chance of blocking, Spirit Ward also has a chance of casting Fade when struck. Although normally only usable by Assassins, Fade gives its user increased resistances to both Elemental and Physical Damage; more the former than the latter.
As a result, Spirit Ward is particularly useful when fighting spellcasters--its boost to resistances plus its chance of casting Fade will raise all resistances to sizable levels as late as Hell mode, while its high defense and chance of blocking ward off physical fighters.
