"As a farmer reaps his wheat, so must the order harvest and purify the weeds."

- Templar scripture(src)

The Templar Order was a group of holy warriors dedicated to the Light, renowned for their ferocity, tenacity, and prowess in battle.[2]

Lore[]

The Templar were founded as holy warriors, fighting for justice and eschewing the dangers that lead to cultism and demonic possession by espousing self-denial. They did not merely pay lip service to protecting Sanctuary—they were battle-trained and experienced to a man.[3] The chalices, vials, and sacred texts of the Templar Order often inspire a deep reverence in those who view or hold them.[4]

There is evidence that once, the Templar Order was a more benign force than what they ended up becoming.[5] Regardless, by the End of Days, the Templar Order abducted innocent citizens and subjected them to horrific torture, purging their memories and molding them into zealous adherents.[6][7] This occurred within rue chambers—rooms within Templar strongholds where the penitents were "reeducated" through scourges and whips, to renounce their past "sins" and give themselves over to the Zakarum faith.[8] The Templars Kormac[9] and Jondar[1] are two such examples of this practice being carried out.

In terms of organization, the Order was led by a Grand Maester. Its subordinate membership consisted of Inquisitors and Templar themselves.[9] The Order's membership was entirely male.[10] It is implied that the Templar had vows against romance, marriage, intercourse, etc.[11]

History[]

The Order remained an enigma to many on the outside, and there were rumors regarding their exact founding and purpose. Though the Templars professed a dedication to the Light and seek to rid Sanctuary of demonic corruption, they were not officially sanctioned by the Zakarum church. Rather, they rose from the ashes of the Hand of Zakarum after it fell to corruption by Mephisto, and they viewed themselves as the new, pure continuation of that faith.[12] In the mind of Diadra, the Templars "represented all that Akarat intended" before they were led astray by the Grand Maester."[5]

During the End of Days, the Templar searched for their holy scrolls, stolen by Archbishop Lazarus.[13] It was found that the Order was involved in the creation of magical weapons, angelic in nature, but designed for human hands.[1]

Storm of Light[]

In 1285, a branch of the Templar under the command of Lord Norlun took control of the Zakarum Cathedral in Westmarch, renaming it the "Church of the Holy Order." They quickly established a sense of authority over the capital's citizens, even if they possessed no official standing. Tensions quickly developed between the Templar and the Knights of Westmarch. While some knights defected to the Templar, most remained true to their own order. The Zakarum Cathedral had once been the Knights' base of operations, and the slight of the Templar taking it as their own had not gone unnoticed.[14]

The Knights came to believe that the Templar were planning a rebellion against King Justinian IV. Whatever the truth of the matter, the Knights moved against the Templar, but their plans were leaked by an informant. As such, the Templar were ready for them. Combat began in the streets, while Templar archers manned the cathedral. However, the Templar found themselves under attack by the Horadrim as well, who attacked them from the rear.Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag
