The Tree of Inifuss

The Tree of Inifuss (or simply Inifuss)[1] is an ancient tree standing in the middle of the Dark Wood.

Lore[]

" The tree...it's guiding my sight! I see the darkness infecting this land. An evil that has festered in the deep places. It corrupts life. Feeds off it like a parasite."

A sacred tree, the Tree of Inifuss teems with magic. Its existence is known as far as Scosglen.[2]

By 1264, the tree was dead, but had somehow managed to escape demonic corruption. Akara bid a group of heroes to bring back carved runes from the tree, through which she could decipher them to unlock the pattern of the Cairn Stones.[2]

By 1270, the tree was still standing.[3] The Druid Hemlir came to the tree, intent on using its magic to cleanse the Dark Wood of corruption. However, he was captured by the Bloodsworn before he could complete the ritual.[4] He later returned to the tree to conduct the same ritual, but was this time protected by a hero/group of heroes. The tree guided his sight, showing the darkness that had corrupted the land. The power of the tree was willing to help them, albeit for a price.[5] Hemlir offered his soul to the tree, but it instead cleansed him of the corruption that had grown inside him. The corruption manifested in a Shadow Clone, but it was destroyed by the hero(es). He revealed that the tree had shown him through its vines as to what ailed the forest—the Blood Rose, which was feeding the Countess blood. He told them that Inifuss could cleanse their own lingering corruption, before he disintegrated.[1]

Diablo II[]

The tree appears in Act I of Diablo II. It holds many mystical properties, such as the key to unlock the magical Cairn Stones. The Tree is guarded by Treehead Woodfist and his minions, a fierce Brute that does anything to prevent players from reaching the sacred Tree.

Reaching the Tree is needed for the quest "Search for Cain". Players need to obtain the Scroll of Inifuss; the rune-inscribed bark of the Tree. Akara will then proceed to translate the runes so that players can unlock the Cairn Stones.

Diablo Immortal[]

The tree reappears in Diablo Immortal as its own zone, featuring a waypoint. It features during the "Between Two Evils" quest, where the player must protect Hemlir from attacking Bloodsworn, and the "Tree of Inifuss" quest, where players must battle Hemlir's Shadow Clone.

The player can trigger an event where they fight a corrupted image of themselves.[3] The tree holds a waypoint.
