"Tyrael told me that the winged assassins were once the sages of wisdom. In return for their vow of eternal silence, they were free to roam Malthael's Pools of Wisdom in the High Heavens. Over the millennia, they learned nearly everything about the past, the present, and even part of what would come. But could they have foreseen their dark fates? That I do not know."— Lorath Nahr(src)
Winged Assassins are only encountered in the Pandemonium Fortress in Act V and, despite their size, are very dangerous opponents. They will often stalk the player, climbing from the cliffs of jumping from the chains, ambushing without warning. In melee combat, they deliver fast and deadly blows, and from mid-range, may jump on the player ferociously, stabbing them with even greater force and enraging (visible by their reddish glow), making their strikes even more powerful for a short time. They can killed while casting and recovering from their leap attacks, but cannot be killed while in midair. As of 2.4, they do not start the combat with leap.
Like Rakanoth, Winged Assassins deal more damage with their leaps if they hit the enemy in the back — that is, if the player is facing away from them. They are often encountered in groups ranging from 2-5 in size (rarely more).
To compensate for all this, Winged Assassins are slower than other enemies positioned as 'fast attack', and have small Life pools.
