A noble Paladin, fervent in his dedication to righteousness, can draw upon the spirit of that dedication to perform seemingly impossible tasks. When surrounded by his enemies, a Paladin versed in this skill sets upon his adversaries with the zealous fervor of many times his number.
Zeal is a sequence of rapid blows with substantial bonuses to attack rating, attack speed, and damage. The first strike lands on the targeted enemy, and subsequent blows hit any enemies adjacent to the Paladin. If the user is only facing one enemy, then Zeal hits the same enemy multiple times; the user cannot perform any other actions until the last strike allowed is used up.
Zeal is uninterruptable; the Paladin always deliver the same number of blows, even though they may not all connect. In the original Diablo II, the Paladin gained a subsequent hit for every level he took in Zeal. This led to some issues as players could become de-synced, leaving them rooted in place swinging for 20 blows and hitting nothing.
In Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, Zeal is limited to just 5 blows, but each one is now more likely to hit its target.
The damage bonus provided by Sacrifice via synergy is higher than that of putting more points into Zeal; it is beneficial to put points into Sacrifice instead of Zeal to increase damage once a desired attack rating is reached.
Maximum attack rate averages 4.8 frames per attack (~5.21 attacks per second) with a one-handed swinging weapon, compared to maximum attack rate of 8 frames (3.125 attacks per second) with the same weapon using a normal Attack.
