A Zod rune is a high rune which can be socketed into equipment in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. Zod runes have only two uses, the Breath of the Dying rune word, and making equipment (including ethereal equipment) indestructible. Zod runes remain valuable, however, as they are the rarest rune in the game, and the second rarest item in the game, behind Tyrael's Might.

Effects

Equipment type Effects
Weapon Indestructible
Body armor or helm Indestructible
Shield Indestructible

Socketing an item with a Zod rune increases the item's level requirement to 69, unless it was already higher.

A Zod rune can make most socketed ethereal items more useful than their non-ethereal equivalents. Since an item does not lose durability with a Zod rune socketed, a hero can make permanent use of an ethereal item's boosted stats, lack of repair costs, and lower Strength and Dexterity requirements. This results in higher damage or defense, more gold saved, and up to 20 stat points freed for other stats.

Sources

In single-player, open and ladder games only, the Horadric Cube can transmute two Cham Runes and one Flawless Emerald into one Zod Rune.

This rune can drop from any lvl 81+ regular enemy in the game and all containers in Act 5 hell. The chance of a rune dropped by a lvl 81+ monster being a Zod is 1:5171.

It is common knowledge that the best way to self-farm a Zod in 1.13+ is through repeated Council runs in Travincal. Council members can drop runes up to Cham, and two of these can be cubed to Zod.

This section contains facts and trivia relevant to this article.

Counting only El runes, it would take exactly 14,281,868,906,496 (14 trillion) through Horadric Cube transmutations to create one Zod Rune.

However, El runes alone won't cut it. In addition, one would also need 362,797,056 Chipped Topazes, 120,932,352 Chipped Amethysts, 40,310,784 Chipped Sapphires, 13,436,928 Chipped Rubies, 4,478,976 Chipped Emeralds, 1,492,992 Chipped Diamonds, 497,664 Flawed Topazes, 165,888 Flawed Amethysts, 55,296 Flawed Sapphires, 18,432 Flawed Rubies, 6144 Flawed Emeralds, 2048 Flawed Diamonds, 1024 Topazes, 512 Amethysts, 256 Sapphires, 128 Rubies, 64 Emeralds, 32 Diamonds, 16 Flawless Topazes, 8 Flawless Amethysts, 4 Flawless Sapphires, 2 Flawless Rubies, and 1 Flawless Emerald.

Selling this instead of using it for a Zod rune would yield 3,999,059,720,467,380 gold (almost 4 quadrillion)-enough to fill a stash to its maximum gold capacity 1,599,623,888 times.
